Dance Forró

dance.

Forró has a lively and active community in Helsinki, and growing in Turku, Tampere, and Rovaniemi. Meet cool people, have fun and develop your skills with a clear progression and precise feedback while enjoying amazing Brazilian music and learning to embody this dance from the summer land.

Join with or without a partner. Start from Level 1 and build your skills together with friends and dance partners. The level system provides a clear and logical progression while the mixed classes are more about developing overall dance skills for balance, coordination, creativity, and expression.

There are different dance styles of Forró, and while most dancers are able to dance with each other, often it is not easy to share a dance between Forró pé de serra or universitário and Forró roots and Forró Eletrônico. The most common style is Forró pé de serra or universitário, and recently there has been more dancers mixing it especially with Forró roots.

music.

We dance to the upbeat and cheery rhythms from Brazilian Northeast.

Forró is a party, and even though the dance looks similar to each rhythm, we dance Xote, Baião, Forró, Xaxado, and Arrastapé.

The traditional band formation is a trio composed of Accordion, Zabumba (drum), and Triangle. While this configuration is still popular, it’s common to see bands that have totally different arrangements.

Throughout the years, Forró music has had influences from different rhythms, such as reggae, samba, bossa nova, and others. Listen to this playlist and move to its beats.

The Forró dance styles have a direct connection to the music. Forró universitário is both a designation of the dance style and the Forró music from late 90s, and early 2000s, while Forró roots is associated with older generation and Forró eletrônico is a totally different branch of music and dance.
